I met Ali in a new mom’s group when Jesse and my daughter Emma were a few weeks old. Our group got together just about every Tuesday for the first year of our new babies lives, most often at the Tea Lounge on Union Street in Park Slope. It was always a treat to engage in conversation with Ali. I remember Ali’s warm smile, her kindness, creativity, insightfulness, welcoming manner and deep seated intelligence. My heart and thoughts are with Ali’s family and close friends...

Dear Pomeroy and Van Taylor Family,

Although I have not seen nor been in touch with Ali since I was nine years old, I always remembered her. We went to Belvoir Terrace together and were in the grey room in 1977, the year the photo of her in front of the main stone building at camp was taken. To be honest, I hated Belvoir Terrace and spent much of my time there being homesick, crying and playing with a Duncan yoyo, but the highlight of the summer was meeting Ali and becoming fast friends with her. Although it’s been 40 years since I saw her, I remember a bright, quiet, sensitive and lovely girl who I was lucky to have met. I was not surprised that one of the documentaries Ali produced focused on Charles Schulz, as we both shared a passion for Peanuts. I watched the film the other day and enjoyed and learned so much. I also remember visiting Ali in Manhattan and going into Central Park together, which was a wonderful, fun adventure for a Brooklyn kid. I live on Central Park West now with my family. I learned about Ali’s death through a recent Facebook post from a friend of Elicia’s. I am so sorry for your family’s two terrible losses and I send my condolences to all of you.

Sincerely, Susan Berger Ellman
