ALI POMEROY

1968-2015

Ali grew up on the Upper West Side. She was the daughter of architect Lee Harris Pomeroy and classicist Sarah Berman Pomeroy, and the younger sister of Jordana and Jeremy. She excelled throughout her education at Ethical Culture, Brearley, Trinity and Yale, where she studied English and Film and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Ali then built a distinguished career as a documentary film producer. She worked for 15 years at Lumiere Productions, where she helped create diverse works including a five-hour "docu-soap" filmed behind the scenes of a local TV newsroom in Charlotte, North Carolina; a biography of cartoonist Charles Schulz; and a history of documentary film. For "With God on Our Side," an investigation of George W. Bush and the religious right, Ali received an Emmy nomination for Excellence in Research.

All of her documentary work is marked by deep intellectual engagement, respect for the viewer, and a thoroughgoing compassion for those portrayed on camera, whatever their background or ideology.

At Lumiere, Ali also met her future husband, David Van Taylor. The two shared their life and work for 20 years. In 2001, they moved to Park Slope, where they built a home with their sons Jesse and Nate and David's daughter Simone. Ali was an extremely dedicated mother and stepmother, and she embraced the communities at Rivendell School and PS 321.

After being diagnosed with cancer in May 2012, Ali forged ahead with a new career based on her lifelong love of--and gift for--cooking and baking. She created Pop Culture Brooklyn, making unique, delicious artisanal popcorn that sold out at local craft fairs and on retail shelves.

Though devastating, Ali's years-long struggle with cancer also revealed the depth and breadth of love she inspired. Neighbors and friends from throughout her life rallied to support Ali and her family in countless ways, for which she was profoundly grateful.
